A lead is someone who shows interest in what you offer. A comment can start that interest. A useful DM gives the person a clear next step, such as opening a guide or booking a call.
With Instagram DM automation, you write a reply once and choose which comment or message starts it. Plan what happens after the reply too.
Choose one thing to offer
Pick a resource people can use now. It might be a recipe, travel checklist, class link, or price list. These are sample messages, not customer results.
| Your goal | Ask in the post | First DM |
|---|---|---|
| Share a guide | Comment GUIDE for my free checklist. | Here’s your checklist. Open it here. |
| Book a call | Comment CALL for available times. | Here’s my booking page. Pick a time that suits you. |
| Explain prices | Comment PRICE for this collection’s price list. | Here are the prices for the collection in this post. |
Use a word that matches the resource. Make the destination work on a phone. If a booking page has no open times, fix it before asking people to book.
Sharing a PDF? Use the free-guide delivery steps to check file access and test the download.
People can request the resource from your inbox too. Use DM keyword replies for a message sent straight to your account, or Story reply setup for an offer in a Story.
Decide where to collect details
You can send a link to a form or collect details inside a supported DM flow. These are different setups.
| Setup | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Send a form link | Your existing form already collects what you need. | The form works on a phone and explains how you will use the details. |
| Ask inside the DM | You want details before the next message. | Your plan includes the fields you need and the flow stores the response as expected. |
| Send the resource without a form | The main goal is helping people use it. | The link opens the promised resource directly. |
WinkSend Professional adds email and phone collection. You can also use a link reply with a separate form. Check current plan features. An external form has its own cost and limits.
In the builder, the email and phone steps sit before the main DM. The screen below shows that both need an opening message first.
For the app fields and retry choices, follow Collect an email before sending your link.
Ask only for details you need. Say what the person will receive and how you plan to contact them. Follow the privacy and marketing rules that apply to your business.
Keep the first reply short
Start with the thing you promised. Give one clear action.
For example: “Here’s the free class guide. Open it here. You can book a call from the last page if you want help choosing a class.”
For a link reply, use Add message → Text. Write the short message, then choose Add link for your guide or booking page. This is an unsaved example.
A guide request does not mean the person has agreed to a long series of sales messages. Paid follow-ups still depend on the platform’s messaging rules.
Test the whole path
- Leave the chosen comment from a separate Instagram account.
- Open the DM and complete any follow or email step.
- Open the linked page on a phone.
- Submit the form or make a test booking where your form allows it.
- Check that the details reached the intended place.
- Check the thank-you message and next step.
Do not claim a campaign works because the first DM arrived. A broken form can lose people after the reply.
Count interest and outcomes separately
Choose a period, such as the week after a post. Record matching comments, successful replies, completed forms, and bookings where those numbers are available.
Keep their meanings separate. A DM sent is not an email collected. An email collected is not a paid booking. If you cannot measure a step, mark it as unknown.
If people receive the DM but do not finish the form, check the promise, link, form length, and phone layout. Change one thing before the next campaign.
Choose the next step
The creator lead collection page helps you choose a reply flow. The comment automation guide covers setup and missing-message checks.
